Press release

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, met with the US Ambassador to Bucharest, Hans Klemm, and with Terri Sewell, Alabama member of the US Congress House of Representatives.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy pointed out the excellent nature of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States of America, evoking the very good discussions that took place between the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, and the President of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump on August 20 in Washington D.C. On this occasion, they talked about the next steps in order to deepen the most important dimensions of the Strategic Partnership.

Thus, Bogdan Aurescu evoked the military and security dimensions of the Strategic Partnership, reiterating the importance of intensifying the American military presence in Romania, the new Government’s commitment to continue to allocate 2% of the GDP for Defense, but also the need to consolidate the Eastern Flank, especially in its Southern part, through an increased participation of the Allies in the Multinational Brigade, as well as by the naval presence of the Allies in the Black Sea. He also expressed the appreciation of Romania for the sustainable partnership with the Alabama National Guard. Moreover, he evoked the successful common project of the presence in Romania of the missile facility at Deveselu, as well as the importance of ensuring its proper protection. He also mentioned the increasing cooperation in the energy and cyber-security fields and pointed out the strong commitment of the Government to the rule of law and to the independence of the justice system.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the two American officials had a brief overview of regional developments, focusing on the current political situation in the Republic of Moldova. Bogdan Aurescu underlined the importance that Romania gives to maintaining the European path and expressed the support of the Romanian Government for the Executive in Chișinău.

Finally, the Romanian official offered multiple reasons and asked the member of the House of Representatives of the US Congress to support Romania’s efforts of entering the Visa Waiver programme – a paramount objective for the Romanian citizens, most of whom are strong supporters of the Strategic Partnership with the USA.

The American officials warmly congratulated Bogdan Aurescu for his new mandate as Minister of Foreign Affairs. They pointed out his personal contribution to the development, over time, of the Strategic Partnership, including through his involvement in the negotiations pertaining to the Bilateral Agreement on the deployment of the Ballistic Missile Defense System. They also expressed their bipartisan support for Romania, for the bilateral Strategic Partnership within the US Congress, and their appreciation for the consistent and coherent efforts made by Romania to consolidate security in the Black Sea and within its NATO mission in Afghanistan, as well as for the active and intense role of Romania within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They also confirmed the continued decreasing trend of visa applications refusals for Romanian citizens, a fact that has been highlighted by the very recent figures for the 2019 fiscal year. This rate has dropped to 9.11 % (from 10.44 % in 2018) – a refusal rate below 3 % is the last benchmark to be met by Romania.
