Romanian Chairmanship 2016

Thematic Exhibitions

The "Education and Remembrance. The Holocaust in Romania" exhibition

The "Education and Remembrance. The Holocaust in Romania" exhibition has been put together by the  „Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania and is translated into English and French in order to ensure a broad public access to its contents. It is focused on the main activities organized by Romania during its 2016 Chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

The two major themes of the exhibition reflect the focus of the Romanian IHRA Chairmanship:

  • Holocaust Education in Romania - both the traditional forms of education (the exhbition includes panels on schools- study visits and the school national contest on Holocaust) and the training sessions organized for public servants in Romania (magistrates and police officers were trained on combating Antisemitism, discrimination and Holocaust denial).
From this perspective, the exhibition includes panels on biographies of Romanians that have saved Jews during World War II and were awarded the title Righteous among Nations. The acts of bravery of these ordinary people are a source of inspiration and life –lessons for young generations.
  • The Memory of the Holocaust in Romania in 2016 is reflected through a panel containing a map of the places of the Iasi Pogrom, also considering the fact that in 2016, 75 years were commemorated since the Pogrom. Also, 2016 was marked by a series of commemorations of the victims of the Holocaust in Romania: 75 years since the Iasi Pogrom, the Bucharest Pogrom, the start of the deportations to Transnistria.
A special place among the panels dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust in Romania holds the commemoration of the victims of the Roma genocide, marked in 2016 through an official ceremony.
