Lazăr Comănescu was appointed minister of foreign affairs of Romania on November 17th, 2015. This is his second term in office, as he previously held the position of minister of foreign affairs of Romania between April-December 2008. He holds the diplomatic rank of ambassador since 1998.
Between February-November 2015, he served as foreign policy adviser of the President of Romania. For 6 years, during 2009-2015, he has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in the Federal Republic of Germany. During 2001-2008 he was the Head of the Mission of Romania to the European Union, respectively (after Romania’s accession to the EU in 2007) the Permanent Representative of Romania to the European Union. Between 1998 and 2001 he served as Head of the Mission of Romania to NATO and EU.
During 1995-1998 he held the position of state secretary within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previously, during 1995, he was Director General, adviser of the minister of foreign affairs and head of the minister's office. Between 1994-1995 he was Director of the European Union Directorate and between 1990-1994 he was Counselor and (since 1993) minister counselor at the Mission of Romania to the European Union in Brussels. Between 1972-1982 he was a diplomat within the Department of International Economic Organizations of the MFA.
During 1982-1990 he was lecturer professor of international economic relations of the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest.
Minister Lazăr Comănescu graduated the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest (Faculty of International Economic Relations). In 1973 he graduated the ,,Cours de civilisation et langue française contemporaines" of the Sorbonne, in Paris.
He holds a Ph.D. title in International Economics since 1983 and during 1995-1998 he was an Associate Professor of the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest.
He is a Member of the Scientific Board of the Romanian Institute for International Studies and a Member of the Scientific Consultative Board of the European Institute in Romania. He is a founding member of the Warsaw Central European Forum.
In 2000 he was decorated with the Romanian National Order for Loyal Service with the rank of Grand Officer and in 2007 he received The Grate Cross of the Romanian National Order for Loyal Service.
In 2015 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Minister Lazăr Comănescu is born on the 4 of June 1949 in Horezu/Vâlcea/Romania. He is married with Mihaela Comănescu and has a daughter.
